Sergei Avksentevich Kolyada | PAINTING THE HEART OF MOSCOW: A SUSTAINED VISION The artworks of Russian artist Sergei Avksentevich Kolyada are intimately tied to his love for his home town of Moscow where he was a faithful resident for the ninety years of his life. A highly accomplished portraitist, still life and landscape artist; it is his series on "Old Moscow" that has received the greatest acclaim by critics, including renowned Russian art commentator Valentina Arzarkovich and art critic Vladimir Kostin. With time, this collection will become essential as a unique and very complete witness of a faithful picture of Old Moscow already disappeared or on the verge of disappearing. Sergei was born in Moscow in 1907. Admitted as an apprentice to famous artist Nicolai Krymov's studio at the age of 18, it was a crucial meeting for Kolyada with a master of impression and light which would have an important influence on his future artistic career. His apprenticeship was followed by four years of study at the prestigious Superior Institute of Arts and Techniques (Vhutemas – Vhutein) under Shterenberg and Guerassimov, after which he joined the OST (Society of Easel Painters) for two years prior to its disbandment by the authorities. The beginning of Kolyada's career coincided with the establishment of Soviet Socialist Realism as the only authorized style of art. Prominent artists and writers joined political authorities in declaring that art and literature must depict the "reality of Revolutionary Russia." Although he was admitted into the Union of Artists and participated in many group exhibitions, he did not gain the prestige of colleagues who fulfilled the Party's plans for realistic Art. He kept his personal and artistic integrity, perhaps at the expense of lost opportunities for advancement. In 1945, a great number of his early paintings (including a number of avant-garde works) were destroyed in a fire at his parents' home. As with numerous artists of that time, Kolyada worked not only for the state in an official capacity; but also created a large body of impressive private works, including portraits, still lives and landscapes. Co-founder of the Society of Painters of the Moscow region and of the Union of Painters of Russia, after the Second World War, he participated in a few artistic missions in the "Pouchinsky-Gory" region (which inspired Pouchkine) and in the kolkhozes of the Moscow's region during the 1950's. In the 1960s, he started painting the landscapes of "his" old Moscow; a long and patient work which he willingly and passionately continued for over 30 years. Focusing on the lesser known streets and laneways, and old condemned suburbs; the subject of each work was painstakingly researched. The artist retrieved old archival records and compiled a dossier for each work detailing the "life" of the house or building he was portraying – who its residents had been, the architect, significant design features, its unique "story." His love for the landscapes of his youth would see him complete a unique collection that with time, is becoming increasingly important as a record of the Moscow that "was" – now replaced in many instances by new housing estates and mass developments, the old buildings lost forever. With "Kouneka" – Moscow 1978 In his last years, one of the (then) oldest member of the Union of Artists of Russia, Kolyada travelled, painted and exhibited outside the URSS; in Australia first, then in France in Etretat, Angers, Dinard and Paris. He died in Moscow in 1996 at the age of 89. Besides a great number of group exhibitions, Kolyada's long career is marked by important solo exhibitions in the prestigious Tretiakov Gallery, the Krimsky-Val Gallery and the Glinka Museum, as well as the famous White House (Douma) for the 850th Anniversary of Moscow foundation. Some of his works have also been included in 5 different exhibitions at the Museum of Russian Art in Minneapolis in the United States. Three important Moscow Museums hold a dozen of Kolyada's works acquired when the artist was still alive: The State Tretiakov Gallery, The Moscow Historical Museum and the Lounatcharsky Museum. All his life, Sergei Kolyada never sought fame. Modest, he always maintained recognition would come at an appropriate time. The legacy of Kolyada and his unique record of "Old Moscow" are today increasingly gaining the prominence they deserve. Sergei Kolyada, at home in Moscow, 1994

Utah Car Insurance | Compare Utah Car Insurance Quotes No-fault insurance states require PIP coverage and have limits for suing Tort system states do not require PIP and do not put any stipulations on civil court actions Drivers in Utah need to make sure they have the minimum legally required insurance coverages and consider additional coverages Generally, no-fault auto insurance refers to insurance coverage that gives policyholders the right to file claims and be paid for losses from their own insurance company no matter who caused the damage. There are no-fault states and there are at-fault states. However, in a legal sense, no-fault means that in addition to this type of insurance coverage, claimants have a restricted right to recourse within the legal system and a limited tort option. First-party coverage is referred to as personal injury protection or PIP for short. In order to sue another party in civil court within a no-fault state, you must have sustained severe injuries and meet certain state criteria. The limits for which you can sue can be related to the severity of your injuries or to the amount of your medical and associated expenses. In fact, in some states, the injured party must be disabled for a certain number of days in order to sue. Enter your zip code above to compare car insurance rates from multiple top companies at once! Currently, Puerto Rico and 12 states have no-fault insurance laws in place. These states include: Florida Michigan New Jersey New York Pennsylvania Hawaii Kansas Kentucky Massachusetts Minnesota North Dakota Utah What is tort insurance system? A tort insurance system is opposite of a no-fault insurance system. In a tort auto insurance system, the driver or another party who is deemed to be the cause of an auto accident will be liable for paying the medical expenses and other damages to the other involved parties. This can include lost wages and payments for pain and suffering. Under a tort system, there are no restrictions for what can potentially be collected for pain and suffering. The only requirements are that the other driver is at fault and you have incurred expenses and suffering for your related injuries. You can make a claim for pain and suffering, no matter what the amount. This is unlike no-fault states, where a minimum must be met. Is Utah a no-fault state? Utah is a no-fault state. Drivers in Utah who are in an accident will be required to turn first to their own insurance coverages to pay for their damages. In some cases, this is their only option. The insurance carrier is legally required to pay up to a minimum of $3,000 in PIP benefits, regardless of who caused the accident. If a Utah driver had a minor accident, this may be the only step in the process. As a no-fault state, injured drivers have limited options and have to follow certain steps. First, they must turn to their own PIP policy. If their $3,000 coverage has been exhausted or if they have had extremely serious injuries from the accident, they may have the right to sue. Injuries that qualify for civil action under Utah law include: Long-term disability Long-term impairment Permanent disfigurement Permanent dismemberment The benefit to living in a no-fault state like Utah is that claims are usually paid faster and overall costs are reduced. This can lead to lower premiums for drivers in no-fault states. However, one downside is that there can be a very broad interpretation of the language used in the law which has the potential to hurt all parties involved. PIP coverage has also become a prime area for unethical doctors and clinics to inflate costs and recommend unnecessary treatments. No-fault states do not have unduly burdened legal systems and can cost taxpayers less. On the other hand, people with very serious injuries have the potential to slip through cracks in the law and not get a fair settlement for their medical bills and pain and suffering. Auto Insurance in Utah Like nearly all other states, Utah has minimum auto insurance requirements for drivers. In addition to the minimum $3,000 PIP that all drivers must carry, they must also have liability coverages as follows: $25,000 per person for bodily injury $65,000 per accident for bodily injury $15,000 per accident for property Liability coverage is strictly for damages you cause to other parties. It does not cover any of your own damages. Additional coverages Utah drivers should consider purchasing include: – Uninsured/Underinsured Motorists If you are a victim of a hit-and-run accident or are in an accident with another driver who does not follow the legal requirements for auto insurance, you can rely on this coverage from your own policy. – Collision and Comprehensive Although not required by law, these coverages are often required if you have a leased or financed vehicle. Collision covers damages to your car if it is in an accident with another vehicle, object, or if you have a rollover crash. Comprehensive coverage is for other situations such as hitting wildlife, flooding, fires, vandalism, theft, or even losses caused by natural disasters. With collision and comprehensive coverage, you select your deductible and policy limits. Finding the Best Car Insurance Coverage in Utah As a Utah driver, it is important to find the best car insurance coverage at rates you can afford. Shopping for an auto insurance policy at the best price is a lot like shopping for anything else. Use these tips to ensure you get the best price for your auto insurance coverage. – Compare Car Insurance Rates from Multiple Companies You will want to get rates from several different companies. It is important to be sure you are comparing the same policy types when doing so. The easiest way to do comparison shopping for auto insurance is to use an online price comparison tool. This is also important to do prior to letting your auto insurance policy auto-renew. – Ask about Available Discounts Good Driver – If you haven't had an accident or a ticket in several years, you may be rewarded with a discount by your insurance company. Good Student – Many auto insurance companies will provide discounts to students with a history of good grades. Multi-Line – If you have other insurance products, such as renters, homeowners, or life insurance with your auto insurance company, you will often qualify for a discount. Anti-Theft – Vehicles equipped with anti-theft devices are seen as less of a risk and often get better insurance rates. Driver Education – If you have taken a defensive driving course or driver's education, you may qualify for a discount. Multi-Vehicle – Having more than one vehicle on the same policy will usually grant you lower rates on your overall policy. Military/Veteran – Many insurance companies will honor members of the military, past or present, with a discount on the auto insurance. You should always plan on shopping around to find the best insurance rates. Doing so will allow you to compare policies and prices and find what works best for your unique situation. Enter your zip code below to find the best car insurance rates in Utah today!

Land is Free | as free as the air we breathe..... Reprinted from article in "Land and Liberty" Spring 2019 Well, we made one rather important mistake. We allowed certain lucky people the ownership of land. We ignored the fact that it is impossible to own land, and we ignored the natural law which states that all people must have equal rights to it. We then failed to distinguish between right and wrong when we allowed the "owners" to keep the location values attaching to sites, which had been created by the actions of the community as a whole. The results have been dire. The vast number of us then had nothing to sell but our labour. We lost the right to receive the whole added value arising from our work. Wages reduced to subsistence level. We were forced to rent our living space from "owners". So now we see that businesses pay rent for their space, pay taxes in a huge number of ways, keep unwarranted amounts for themselves, and are pressured into continuous growth. The payment of rents by businesses and working people creates inequality. Those in command of such wealth have ensured that the laws of the country are directed to their benefit. We are now entering into a sort-of end-game. Rents naturally rise to the maximum affordable, because there is nothing tangible supplied that can be used as a measure of value. Rents are now so high that young people can no longer save for a deposit. Land prices are so high, reflecting the rents, that all sorts of speculators are drawn into the market. Land becomes "owned" by fewer and fewer, reflecting the consolidation of wealth. On the misery side of the equation, hardship and homelessness drives many into drugs, and now shorter lives. Had we not better sit up and think? Where did we go wrong? Do we have enough conscience left to see what we did? What we should have done is that land should be held on secure tenure, not amounting to ownership. The user has the right to use subject to paying the community the location value of that site. The location value is the natural recompense to the society which together has provided all the benefits of a site. Society then does not need taxation. The result would be that no-one would hold land they did not need. This would now produce freedom for the vast number of us, able to work. We now have the option of setting up by ourselves, where we can receive the whole value of our efforts. Businesses would now be bidding up the wages from working from them. Partnerships and common ownership arrangements would flourish. The price of land would reduce to nil, as the rents which sustained it are exchanged for the payment of location value to the state. A house can then be bought for the building costs alone. The non payment of rents brings inequality gently to a close. Now, inequality only results from extra work or talent. Every improvement of facilities will bring a natural reward in higher location values. One simple change. Why don't we go for it?

Alexander Technique Running | Running and the Alexander Technique "The Alexander Technique is a method for improving motor performance by integrating the voluntary and reflex components of a movement in such a way that the voluntary does not interfere with the reflex and the reflex facilitates the voluntary." Frank Pierce Jones The Alexander Technique is not a running method; it is a method that addresses the posture that supports running, and, indeed, all movement, and is therefore an excellent technique for improving running form and avoiding injury. What I have written in these pages on running, gleaned from 40 years of running and some 35 years in the Alexander Technique, are observations on how runners with excellent posture can run. It is not intended as a "how-to", but more as a "what not-to-do." I won't attempt here to explain the Alexander Technique, as there are plenty of good books that go into great depth, including Alexander's own. And, at any rate, there is no replacement for private lessons with a certified Alexander Technique teacher (one certified by STAT, or one of its affiliates, such as AmSAT in the U.S. or CanSTAT in Canada – one should be wary of teachers who don't have STAT affiliate certification). I will, however, briefly explain how I understand the physiology behind the Alexander Technique and how it applies to running. In vertebrates, movement is initiated, organized and distributed through the spine. (see The Spinal Engine , which explains how the movement of the legs and arms in running originates with spinal movement) In fact, it is possible to measure muscle action in the upper neck preparatory to the movement of a finger (The Head-Neck Sensory Motor System, ed. Alain Berthoz). The first part of any movement, including walking, running and simply breathing [see: Breathing and running ] involves the adjustment of the head's weight, because the movement of a limb implies a change in the balance of the whole body. Further, movement of a limb demands the support of the spine. The spinal musculature is composed of chains of smaller muscles, which, when co-ordinated, can powerfully extend the spine against the contraction of the large muscles which attach the limbs to the spine. For example, when one lifts a heavy object with an arm, that action should not compress or bend the spine – when a leg extends or recovers in running, that movement should not result in arching of the lower back, or tilting of the pelvis – the extensor muscles of the spine reflexively act to resist the contraction of the large muscles of the limbs, and, in fact, actually prepare to do so before the movement of an arm or leg even begins. At least, this is what happens when good posture is present. In actuality, what we see in many people is quite different: their necks and backs shorten and contract with the effort of moving their limbs. Runners hunch and arch, effectively compressing their trunks and retracting their limbs. They have learned to work against themselves. At birth, we can see reflexes that will control posture and movement already at work. A normal child has the balanced and interactive muscle tone that defines good posture. Good posture is movement, not positioning. Certain extensor reflexes can be immediately tested in newborns – pressure against the ball of a foot will elicit counter pressure, demonstrating how the body has evolved to lengthen against the force of gravity (as occurs in natural running), or, indeed against any exterior force placed upon it. One can also test, in infants, reflexes that protectively retract the limbs, and completely inhibit the extensor reflexes of the spine. The Moro reflex is a reflex, studied in apes and in man, which can best be described as a grasping reflex. Take an infant and make a sudden movement as if to drop it (well, don't actually do this, take the word of researchers who've studied it), and you will see a stereotyped two-phase response. The first is extensor – reaching out with the hands and arms, the second, flexor, retracting and adducting the arms and legs and collapsing the neck and spine. In arboreal apes, the purpose of this reflex is evident – the infant must grasp its parent in time of flight, as the parent needs both limbs available. In most environments, this reflex is only occasionally stimulated. In modern man, it is constantly stimulated. To be precise, the Moro reflex does not persist beyond a few months of age. However, similar responses do persist, and are referred to as startle responses. They look very much the same as the Moro reflex, demonstrating a strong and rapid grasping response, during which the extensor reflexes are inhibited. These retractive, grasping reflexes are stimulated by fear and pain. You can see them at work when you surprise someone. You can see them at work when someone is injured. And you can see them at work when someone is afraid, or simply worried. Children who begin to hunch over at their desks at school, grasping their pencils as if they were life preservers, are demonstrating the stimulation of grasping responses. As I mentioned, this is not a problem if the stimuli are rare and of brief duration, but in most early learning environments they are frequent and sustained. Children are afraid of not doing well, of not being liked, of not being understood. So they retract and hunch over. If they succeed in their tasks in spite of their retracted state, they learn to retract as a means of self-control. Eventually, the extensor reflexes of their spine are constantly inhibited, and all movement becomes more effortful. They over-stabilize their joints, and move against the resistance of contracted muscles. Muscle work is no longer reflexively distributed through the spinal musculature, and is instead focused on individual muscles. And then we see what we identify as poor posture – hunched or arched backs, rounded shoulders, shortening necks, etc. The obvious and incorrect response to poorly positioned body parts is to "properly" position them. So we attempt, or we tell children to attempt to stand straight, to pull their shoulders back and down, and we use the incorrect notion of alignment to support our wrong conception of good posture. (see The Myth of Alignment) So much poor advice that we read about running form is about how to "hold" the body. Runners are told to keep the shoulders down, to cup the hands, to keep the elbows at 90 degrees, to recover the legs with the hamstrings, to shorten their strides, to keep the body aligned, and there are running coaches who insist that one can improve running posture by strengthening muscles (you cannot). The problem is, if a shoulder is rounded forward due to the installed pattern of constant retraction, pulling the shoulder back will simply add new effort and increase fixity in the shoulder joint. Trying to stand up straight will simply be adding more work to an already over-worked musculature. This is where the Alexander Technique comes in. With gentle hands-on work, an Alexander Technique teacher brings a student's awareness to stabilized articulations, and guides the student to permit freedom and movement. The repeated experience of hands-on guidance increases the student's awareness of himself, and teaches him to remove retraction and fixity from neutral posture. He may then learn to initiate movement without preparatory hardening and retraction. Hands-on private lessons are essential, because habitual preparation is very difficult to inhibit, and movement initiation by a teacher removes responsibility for the beginning of movement, making it far easier for the student to allow himself to move without preparation. Actually, good posture is dynamic, a condition in which all muscles are lightly active, from which all movement may be accomplished without any preparatory hardening or stabilizing. Running begins, in all vertebrates, with a release of the head and lengthening of the spine. Again, many of the muscles which extend the spine against the action of large muscles of the limbs are of small mass, and are only strong when organized in chains. The constant habitual retraction and adduction of the limbs inhibits spinal extensors, so it is important that one learn to allow the head and limbs to release outward in order to re-establish the spinal extensors. One cannot simply "straighten-up" to good effect. So, in no particular order, here are a series of articles on aspects of running form. Hopefully, they can serve as guidelines for what happens in running when good use of the body is optimal. My unique contribution to running is my theory of the biarticular muscles in running (see: The Biarticular Muscles in Running). Good running!
