一期一会〜Ichigo Ichie〜 | one opportunity, one encounter one opportunity, one encounter,Hi, I''m Keiko from Osaka! This is one of the questions I am asked a lot by tourists who are visiting this region, but on a tight schedule. Osaka or Kyoto, which city should I visit? "Both!" I really want to say. But I understand this is not possible for some, and perhaps even not desirable for those who would want to spend enough time to explore a city they are visiting, instead of jumping from one city to another, tiring themselves… So, in this article, I have tried to make a comparison of Osaka and Kyoto based on 4 factors of tourist attractions, food, price, and people. On Tourist Attractions Comparing Osaka and Kyoto on their main tourist attractions, I would say, Kyoto wins. Kyoto is full of historical tourist attractions as well as World Heritage sites such as temples and shrines; Kinkaku temple, Kiyomizu temple, Fushimi shrine, Arashiyama … to name a few. These seem to be of interest to our foreign tourists. In Kyoto, you will be able to visit the great representation of what people image to be "uniquely Japan." In comparison, there aren''t many of these "uniquely Japanese" sites in Osaka, beyond Shitenno-temple, Osaka tenmangu, Osaka castle… Osaka is more famous for modern architectures or leisure spots such as Universal Studio Japan, Sky Building. On Food and Cuisine If you want to enjoy food, I personally recommend Osaka. Osaka is known as the city of "Kuidaore (eat till drop or eat into bankruptcy)" or as the central kitchen of Japan. The city is full of inexpensive, delicious food including an incredible amount of street food. In particular, Osaka is famous for cheap eats such as okonomiyaki, udon, takoyaki as well as fancy treats such as king crabs and puffer fish. In Kyoto, one can also enjoy a good amount of food such as kaiseki (traditional Japanese multi-course meals), tofu, ramen, matcha sweets, and sake from Fushimi area, though Osaka may have more varieties. On Accommodation If the budget is not your problem, I definitely recommend Kyoto. Kyoto is full of renowned ryokans (traditional inns) that the world travelers admire, in addition to a great number of hotels. If you are traveling in Japan, you would certainly want to try staying in a ryokan where you can experience the traditional Japanese culture, customer service and the historic feels. Osaka, on the other hand, is fit for budget travelers. It may not have celebrated ryokans, but the hotel prices tend to be lower compared to those in Kyoto. Price The cost of living/traveling is cheaper in Osaka compared to Kyoto. As matter of fact, the cost of living in Kyoto is believed to be 3rd highest in Japan, after Tokyo and Kanagawa. Though Osaka certainly is not the cheapest place to live, being that Osaka is a big metropolitan city, but Osaka is still cheaper than Kyoto especially when it comes to food and hotels. People There seems to be a bit of rivalry between the people of Osaka and the people of Kyoto, based on my observation as a local resident… People of Osaka perceive people of Kyoto to be egoistic or too proud whereas people of Kyoto perceive people of Osaka to be vulgar or crass. As an Osakan, I admit that there are actually some people who are a bit vulgar and lack manner. Unfortunately, it is common to witness people jumping in front of you in the lines, littering, walking and smoking, etc. But Osaka is filled with extremely friendly, fun-loving people, which is why I am proud of my city. In comparison, people in Kyoto, in fact, are more "refined." Based on my biased opinion, there is also a persistent culture of "no first time customers (members only)" uniquely to some sections of Kyoto, where people tend to distinguish "insiders" and "outsiders." Of course, this does not apply to all people or establishments of Kyoto. Conclusion It is actually hard to say which city is better, especially because it really depends on what you want to see and experience. But if I had only one day, and had to choose, I would actually choose Kyoto. The beauties of temples and shrines in Kyoto are not to be missed. If you are a foodie, perhaps you may enjoy Osaka better where the food are abundant and cheap. So I guess that''s it – if you want to tour around, go to Kyoto, if you want to eat around, go to Osaka. Either way, I hope you will enjoy what this region has to offer.

The Conservative Income Investor | Aside from the usual recommendations to own companies with dominant market positions, strong balance sheets, and high earnings growth, what is something that investors should keep in mind over the next 20+ years of investing that maybe didn't matter as much in the past? My view is that investors should be taking to heart the 1970s recommendations of Peter Drucker who predicted that one of the endings of perpetual technological development is that friction will cease to exist between the original source of a product and the consumer. This means that you should be wary about investing in companies that act as middlemen. Take something like Dick's Sporting Goods (DKS). It's a $5.3 billion company that is divided into 114 million pieces that trade at $47 per share each. It earns a profit of $350 million, or $3.07 per share. The valuation of 15x earnings is pretty low for a company that has ten-year top-line growth of 11.5%, ten-year earnings per share growth of 16.5%, and a valuation of 19-23x earnings during that time. Since the $3 per share IPO in October 2002, the stock has grown a $10,000 investment into $151,000 in just fourteen years. That is especially impressive when you consider that the current valuation of the stock is competitive with the recession-level P/E ratio level and is otherwise the cheapest opportunity to buy Dick's Sporting Goods since the IPO. Yet, when I study Dick's Sporting Goods, there is a limitation on the type of way it should be considered. It's not something like General Electric, Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, Nestle, or Brown Forman where you can buy the shares, and then set it and collect the dividends for the rest of your life knowing with a high probability that something will be there decades from now. There will come an expiration date for the company because the original source goods--the Nike and Under Armour products that get customers through the door--are now beginning to contact customers directly without the need for a vendor middleman like Dick's Sporting Goods to act as an intermediary to connect Nike shoes and golf clubs to the consumer. At first, I noticed that Nike and Under Armour were beginning to sell their own products directly to consumers online. That was something that would compete with Dick's Sporting Goods, but not necessarily in a mutually exclusive way--it is conceivable to think of a world where Nike and Under Armour's online sales grow while Dick's Sporting Goods also earns a tidy growing profit selling those goods to customers as well. That's because shoes, jackets, shirts, pants, and so on are the type of good you like to see firsthand and get a feel for--it's distinguishable from buying a book on Amazon because there is a certain in-person customization that enough customers will require. But what has bothered me, from the perspective of someone studying the business model at Dick's Sporting Goods, is that Nike and Under Armour have successfully opened their open stores that sell their products directly to consumers. If there is a pair of Nike shoes that you want, why not just go to Nike instead of an intermediary that will have to raise the price enough to own their own keep as well? The coherence of the intermediary's business model takes on a substantial impairment when the end products that a customer desires can be purchased through the end company itself. There are three reasons why a business earns a profit over the long term. You may buy something because it is cheap, you may buy something because it is convenient, and you may buy something because you want the specific product itself. An example of the first category is airlines--unless you belong to a frequent flyer program, you will choose which airline to travel based on price. If Delta tickets cost $139, and Southwest tickets cost $129, you're going to choose Southwest unless there is some other externality weighing on your decision--e.g. maybe you had a bad experience flying Southwest before, maybe the Delta routes are more timely, etc. Absent an intervening externality, price wins out. Convenience is the second moat, and this is the weakest of them all. You might frequent a grocery store because it's by your house--you wouldn't actively choose it based on price, and you don't seek out the grocery store for it's own sake, but it's only a five minute drive away so you go there anyway. And the third type of business is the strongest--when you want the specific product itself. You don't just want shoes--you want Nike shoes. You don't just want soda--you want something sold through Coca-Cola, Pepsi, or Dr. Pepper. You don't just want acetaminophen--you want Johnson & Johnson's Tylenol. Using our Dick's Sporting Goods example, you can see that the profits are built on convenience. People don't want Nike shoes because they bought them at Dick's Sporting Goods; they buy them at Dick's Sporting Goods because that is the most convenient way to get Nike shoes with the immediate knowledge that they fit. This is the type of business model that is the most vulnerable to disruption. It doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy Dick's Sporting Goods--the current price around $47 per share does offer some protection, but it's the kind of company that you may not want to hold beyond five years. A quick 40% pop, or the spotting of a branded company with a similar valuation to Dick's, is enough justification to get out of the company because firms built on convenience exclusively are not inherently meant to be lifetime holdings. This observation usually leads to a follow-up like: So what do you do if you own Wal-Mart stock? There are three things that Wal-Mart has going for it that might distinguish from an investment in a firm like Dick's Sporting Goods. It sells products that don't face competition from the branded source; it has the additional benefit of cost advantages in addition to convenience advantages; and the firm is 50% owned by the Walton family which reduces the inherent conflict of self-interests that exists in a corporation where there is a disunity between management and shareholders. Although Wal-Mart faces convenient and price competition from Amazon, and in some instances, Aldi and Kroger, it still offers enough of a price advantage on a decent number of offerings that it may be the preferred choice of customers not only because it is close by but also because you want to see the oranges and bananas before you buy them and there's probably not a better price if you look elsewhere either. The Wal-Mart business model isn't just built on convenience; it's built on the mixture of cost and convenience. Also, anytime you buy stock in a company, you also face the disadvantage of not fully knowing what's going on inside the company. When you buy a few hundred or a few thousand shares of a billion-dollar corporation, you can't quite measure the management team's survivalist instinct and know the specifics of how that instinct (if it exists) translates into a sound strategy that will serve shareholders well. With the Walton family collectively owning over $100 billion of the company's $214 billion in market value, you can strongly presume that the survivalist instinct exists at the management level (because the Walton family's control of the board permits them to choose officers) so the only unknown is whether the survivalist instinct translates into a strategy that permits shareholders to prosper. It's one set of unknowns instead of a double set of unknowns. The most straightforward way to solve this problem--recognizing that Wal-Mart has a strong cost and convenience advantage but unsure whether it is built to withstand the decades--is to take your Wal-Mart dividends if Wal-Mart is a meaningful position you hold and then invest them in companies that more clearly have generational-holding characteristics. If the Wal-Mart business model is only meant to grow earnings for 23 more years, well, you get at least 92 dividend payments to mitigate that final outcome. But if you're trying to figure out what should be your investing north star for the next two decades, and have concerns about the rate of disruption brought about by technological change, then you should focus on companies where people seek it out to specifically acquire the products that they sell. Strong brands should be your first priority, and can easily fill two thirds of a portfolio. Then, you focus on the low-cost producers in an industry that have some type of cost advantage--companies with the GEICO, Wells Fargo, U.S. Bancorp, Exxon business model. That can take up anywhere from 10% to 30% of your selections. And lastly, you should aim to keep less than 10% of your wealth that is earmarked for long-term business ownership towards those companies that are exclusively about convenience. Those are the businesses most susceptible to shareholder wipeout, and therefore, should be a disfavored investment category.

Orpington Video and Film Makers | Amateur Film Makers since 1958 Based in Orpington, Kent, UK As you may have been saddened to learn, one of our longest serving members James Morton-Robertson passed away recently from Leukaemia. James Morton-Robertson – Memories from Jane Oliver Chairman of OVFM and personal friend of James. James Morton-Robertson was born on 11th August 1937 and was proud of his Scottish heritage. His broad Scottish accent never left him. As a young man, Jim studied to become a design draughtsman and was part of the production team for the electronic newscaster advertising boards like the one at Piccadilly Circus. Subsequently he set up his own computer software and consultancy business. This is where I first came across him. Some 20 years ago, whilst searching for a firm that could provide a computer with video editing software, I came across Amplix Services, Jim's business and went to see his edit suite set up. It was impressive. Soon I was parting with my well-earned cash. Jim built a high spec graphics computer capable storing and editing huge video files, loading all the software. He provided ongoing support, right to the end of his life, something that cannot be bought. He ran the 'Kemsing Video Club'. I began attending these meeting at his house with his wife Jennifer, Barbara Darby and other like-minded folk. We watched one another's films and discussed how they could be improved. Jim's feedback was blunt, to the point, even harsh at times, but it was honest and what I needed in order to learn and develop my filmmaking skills. James was an accomplished and skilful film maker who enjoyed a challenge. Using his technical 'know how', understanding of camera settings, editing tools and programs, he became an award winning film maker. At OVFM, he wrote articles in the club's 'Viewfinder' magazine, whether to provide training, review software or cinematic films. He took on the 'official' photographer role when asked to. His creative mind came up with all sorts of stories. Sometimes he was called upon as 'speaker' and I remember a session where he unpicked the famous 'shower scene' in Alfred Hitchcock's horror movie 'Psycho'; absolutely fascinating. As a prolific film maker he made films for almost every project evening, right up to our last meeting before lockdown. Having travelled the world extensively, he would treat us to his latest adventures. Australia, New Zealand, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Barbados, Sri Lanka, France, Spain, Germany, Ireland, the USA, not forgetting the wine route in South Africa. Another love of his was 'wine'; making it, tasting it and drinking it; he successfully ran the Otford Wine Club for years. With an interest of flying he joined the U3A Aviation section; spending time 'flying' his latest 'simulator' at home. Jim made films with me, Barbara Darby, Hugh Darrington, his first wife Jennifer and others. Jennifer sadly died in 2010. He particularly enjoyed making funny films with Hugh; often using animation and special effects. These fascinated him. 'The Open Road' in which a two 'slugs', narrated by Jim and Jennifer, set off on the open road one bank holiday, only to come to a grinding halt behind a 'snail' interpreted by him as a 'caravan'. What an imagination and what amazing animation skills! In 2015 he married Fran whom he had been friends with for many years. He was proud to be a Scotsman and wore the full Scottish regalia; 'Robertson' tartan, sporran and all' when he wed Fran. Now Fran would feature in his films, and 'Jim' became 'James' to me and a few others, but at OVFM he was still known as 'Jim'. He wasn't shy of acting in front of the camera. He had us in stitches when he donned his Lycra green suit in order to do a disappearing act. He stumbled both physically and in his speech when playing a drunkard in another film and Barbara Darby and I could hardly contain ourselves as we filmed James chasing an imaginary fly around the house trying to swat it with a rolled up newspaper for his film 'Obsession'. He had to have a gory ending, one that would prove he wasn't imagining the fly. He revealed a nasty squashed mess on the newspaper, generated with the use of 'special effects'. The credits included a note at the end of the film 'no fly was harmed in the making of the film'! His popular film 'Whitefella Dreaming' was beautifully narrated by his brother Brian, who having emigrated in Australia as a young man, had the perfect Australian accent to fit the bill. James made hundreds of films. We are privileged to have some of them in the archive. He entered film after film into competitions and with such a broad spectrum, managed to lift every trophy OVFM had on offer, all 12 of them. Very few of us will achieve this in our lifetime. James wasn't restricted to filmmaking; he joined the Otford Art Club and many of his paintings adorned the walls of his home. James taught me to persevere, to take on new challenges and to use gifts; art, storytelling, film making, whatever; to ensure our passion lives on to benefit future generations. This year, to keep up with the latest technology, he was learning DaVinci Resolve and Fusion, new editing programs that are too difficult for many of us to get to grips with. The film that meant the most to James was his award winning 'Hampden P1344'; the aircraft in which his father, James Morton-Robertson, the wireless operator, was shot down in World War II. James was only five at the time his father was killed. He dedicated many years to tracing one survivor, interviewing him, and to following the finding, recovery and restoration of that aircraft, now at the RAF Museum at Cosford. Barbeques, quizzes, garden parties, some with strawberries & cream, others with fish & chips, James accommodated them all in his garden; made even more beautiful by Fran's clever and colourful planting. Chatter, laughter, clanging of glasses is what I'll remember of these occasions, interrupted only by the sound of the Merlin engine of the Spitfire flying overhead, with James admiring it and waving as though it were flying over especially for him. Indeed he was a pilot, having completed his first solo flight in March 1959 in a De Havilland Chipmunk or 'Chippy' as they were known, whilst in the RAF in 1959, a career he didn't pursue. James was recently diagnosed with Leukaemia. He and Fran had hoped they'd get to enjoy at least another six months together. He had fibrosis of the lungs and sadly developed a chest infection. He slipped away peacefully at Pembury Hospital on 10th July 2020, just five weeks after his diagnosis and one month short of his 83rd birthday. James was given a wonderful send off, when Fran, unbeknown to others, had a recording played at the end of his service …… yes, the sound of the unmistakeable Merlin engine of the Spitfire, paying a fitting tribute to him. James leaves a huge void in the world of film making. We will miss him very much. PETER MITCHELL We also lost Peter Mitchell too, who passed away a few weeks ago in hospital. Peter MItchell by Jane Oliver Peter Ronald Michell, was born on 9th July 1936 and enjoyed a happy childhood in the Brockley/Catford area of London. Peter excelled in maths and on leaving school worked in an engineering factory. His two years National Service with the Royal Airforce was spent in the Far East and he had fond memories of this time. On returning to 'civi street' he got a job in the civil engineering department at Imperial College, initially working with concrete and later in administration, where he served on a number of committees and joined the college's Holland Club. He gave loyal service to Imperial College, whose focus, amongst other things, is in engineering, remaining there for the rest of his working life. Indeed it was here that he met his wife, Janet. Rumour has it that he wooed her over breakfast! They married at the end of August 1974. He and Janet travelled throughout Europe and also went to America, during their happy years of marriage. Janet would spend time focusing on her love of Bonsai, whilst Peter focused his attention on capturing photographic records of these holidays. Peter belonged to a number of clubs, including dining clubs, computer clubs, camera clubs and OVFM. His great love was photography. He always had his camera with him, taking photos, composing each shot to give the best image, developing them and exhibiting them, winning many awards for his work. At OVFM, whilst he did not produce films, he enjoyed watching those of other club members, joining in constructive feedback to filmmakers. He was a regular attendee, only missing evenings through holidays or illness. He introduced us to a speaker from his computer club, Andrew Bishop, a professional animator, who fascinated us with his wonderful mind boggling creations. We, at OVFM, will remember Peter as a quiet, calm and mild mannered gentleman who, over coffee, would share his love of the Japanese Bonsai garden he had created for and with his wife Janet, whom he adored. Peter was a Charlton Athletic fan, something he kept close to his chest, maybe having witnessed the banter and torment that rival supporters of Arsenal and Chelsea levelled at one another from time to time. In recent years Peter was living with the effects of bladder cancer for which he had undergone radiotherapy treatment. Peter had become increasingly weak and tired. He spent the last two weeks of his life in Darenth Valley Hospital. He had suffered a collapsed lung and sadly passed away on 8th June 2020, one month short of his 84th birthday. Peter will be sadly missed at the club and we offer his wife Janet our sincere condolences. OVFM sends out condolences to the family and friends of both Jim and Peter and if you have any memories or messages you wish to share about Jim and Peter, please reply to this post below.
