FutureofWorking.com | Career Advice for the Future When giving a speech or presentation, how you start can make or break you. You want the beginning to be strong and instantly pull your audience in so that you have their full attention from the get-go. Here are 25 effective ways to start a speech or presentation. 1. The Common Ground Open Opening with a real life experience, goal or interest is a great way to grab the attention of the audience to show them that they can gain something by listening to you. By establishing common ground with the audience, especially if it is done with humility and grace, you put yourself on the same level as your audience. If you are an elderly CEO of a company and you discuss finances with a group of younger entry-level employees, you have to share your own business experiences when you were younger so that the audience will better understand your message. 2. Ask a Question If you want to make your audience think right away, ask them a question to start your speech. Ask either a rhetorical or literal question. Whether or not an answer to that question is called for, when people are posed with a question that matters to them, they will intuitively answer. When you ask a question, raise your hand to indicate what you want the audience to do. After asking a question like "How many people here are self-employed?", see if any audience members raise their hands. Take advantage of this engagement by getting into the heart of your speech. 3. Quote Sometimes it is as easy as opening with a relevant quote. You can set the tone for the rest of your speech if you have a quote that is memorable. You should keep in mind that whoever you quote has to be well known by the audience because if it is someone like your next-door neighbor, the quote will fall flat with everyone. If you are discussing topics related to politics, for example, it is wise to quote a former United States President. "If there is anything that a man can do well, I say let him do it. Give him a chance." -Abraham Lincoln 4. The Contrast Open If speeches feel like boxing matches to you, this type of opening would often be used. Showcase the difference between diametrically opposed concepts, positions, ideas or words, and the end result will be that some audience members will feel persuaded to change their perspective or embrace something new. There are always two sides to every story, and both sides have to be equally presented. What are the differences between a need and a want? Obstacles and opportunities? Problems and solutions? Highlighting the differences will get audiences to understand the points you are trying to make. 5. Tell a Story Before making the key points of your speech, telling a story to start can draw your audience in. Some of the most powerful words that can immediately grab the attention of the audience would be "Once upon a time" because regardless of age people will love stories of any kind. When you start your speech with a line like "Once upon a time", the audience will know that a story is coming. People will immediately calm down, become quiet, and listen to what you have to say. Whether it is fiction or non-fiction, telling a story will resonate with audience members. 6. Imagining Something If you want people to go on a unique journey with you, encourage them to imagine certain scenarios. For example, if you are working for a non-profit organization that brings water to people who lack the resources to get water, a good opener would be something like "Imagine being thirsty all the time, but never having anything to drink." By having them imagine scenarios like that, you make the audience a part of your presentation. They can actively empathize and engage with the content of your speech because they actually put themselves into that setting. 7. Humor Though this should never be forced onto the audience, when properly implemented you will put a lot of smiles on the faces of those you speak to. Being funny during a speech can be very difficult, but it is a way to give yourself relief as a public speaker. Telling jokes in your opening is a sign to the audience that you don't take yourself too seriously, and that they can relate to you in some way. One witty opener would be "If you can hear me, please start clapping as to confuse those that cannot make out what I am saying." 8. "This Day In History" Open One main reason why audiences gather to listen to speeches is that they can learn something. If you start your speech with a historical fact, the audience will immediately pay attention. For example, if the day of your speech falls on March 5, you would open your speech with "On this day, March 5, 1963: the Hula Hoop, a hip-swiveling toy that became a huge fad across America when it was first marketed by Wham-O in 1958, is patented by the company's co-founder, Arthur "Spud" Melin. An estimated 25 million Hula Hoops were sold in its first four months of production alone." 9. Thank the Organizers and Audience If you want to stick to the basics of public speaking, simply mention the people who made it possible for you to have a presentation. Thanking the event organizers and the audience compliments them, makes them feel proud and happy about your presence, and strongly connects you to the audience. Refer to the person who introduced you to one or more of the senior people in the organization in the audience, and compliment that person as a showing of respect. Be humble and genuine in your positive comments toward the organization. 10. Positive Statement Staying positive throughout a speech can be challenging, but it will become easier if you start your speech with a positive statement. You can begin by telling the audience how much they will like and appreciate what you have to say. For example, you could say something like "You're really going to enjoy the time we spend together today. I'm going to share with you some of the most thought-provoking ideas my company has ever made." The upbeat tone of this opening is enough to make the audience invested in whatever follows. 11. The Skeptical Audience Open A doubting audience is a difficult audience to handle. From the start, they may not trust your ideas or they could be against what you are proposing. Whether they were disappointed in the past or if they are simply stuck in their ways, they will put up a brick wall in front of you. The more hostile the crowd, the faster you must address the gap. Blending your goals and the needs of the audience requires a careful combination of anticipating the major objections, avoiding defensiveness, acknowledging the obvious truths early, and understanding the divided loyalties between the intractable, the undecided, and the supportive. Identify which of those must hear your message and adjust accordingly. 12. The Puzzle Open Brain teasers and mind puzzles tend to capture the attention of audiences that like to be given mental exercises. As the audience tries to figure out what it will take to solve them, they become highly engaged with the practice. Capitalize on this behavior by proposing a riddle, asking a puzzling question that you promise to reveal in the end, and suggesting that the audience complete a mathematical equation and promising to give the answer context as you go along during the speech. Alternatively, reveal one puzzle piece after another throughout the course of your speech to help your audience find the right solution. 13. Refer to Current Events Bringing documentation of something that is currently relevant to the public will help you to illustrate your point the way you want to. Use a current event story that is on the front page of your local newspaper to transition into your subject, and hold it up as you refer to it in your introduction. This serves as a visual image to the audience that they will keep in their minds as they see you hold up this documentation. When they hear you recite or read a key point of the news story, they will carefully pay attention to you. 14. Refer to a Recent Conversation One way to keep the topic you wish to talk about relevant to the audience is to refer to a recent conversation you had with someone attending this public speaking event. Hours or minutes before you get on stage to address the audience, you could be engaging in a thought-provoking conversation with someone in a lobby, and that person might tell you that this is one of the best times to be working in a specific industry. It is likely that many audience members will share the same view as that person, so when you mention this conversation in your introduction they will have something to relate to. 15. The Activity Open An active audience is one that will be more likely to keep listening to you after you finish your introduction. Keeping an audience preoccupied with an activity works well during training sessions and workshops when you are trying to teach a specific skill. Engaging in activity right from the start allows the audience to recognize the benefits of listening to your message. The activity has to be fun but also challenging enough. If they quickly get through it they will spend the rest of the workshop sitting in their chairs doing nothing. 16. The Study Hall Open If you are someone who loves using data-heavy charts and graphs to illustrate your points, you have to be careful about how you present your data to the audience. While they want to be informed, people in the audience also don't want to be bombarded with too much information all at once. Establishing a school setting and distributing paper handouts of data to your audience to begin your session helps them to follow along. Ask them to read the charts and graphs, and following their review you are well on your way to making your key points. 17. The PowerPoint Open When PowerPoint technology is used correctly it is a highly effective tool for the audience. Otherwise, it immediately makes your presentation feel boring. Slides that are overly literal will fall flat, but conceptual and eye-catching images give strength to your words. Pick captivating and intriguing images. If you present a talk on how to make ice cream, you could begin with a slide that shows the finished product of your ice cream brand. Describe the process of making ice cream in your introduction, and as you proceed you show slides in reverse, moving from final product to the very beginning. Along the way, you guide the viewer through each step. 18. The Audio Clip Open Your voice remains front and center for your talk, but additional sounds can bring more clarity to your message. Your words will be given more meaning with the help of a short audio clip as it makes your message more memorable. If you are teaching a music school, you can include two brief audio excerpts, a before and after of student instruction. Though your words do matter, these clips can have a better impact in persuading students to join your school. Audio testimonies, song recordings, oral accounts, and speech snippets all make for good audio clips. 19. Silence A subtle pause of silence, even if it extends to only 10 seconds, gives your audience enough time to sit and quiet down. Most audiences expect a speaker to begin right away. If you want to get the attention of an audience, taking that extra pause will help your cause. People will start wondering why you are being so quiet as they gather around, and when you break your silence and start speaking you can use that pause to illustrate a key point. Sometimes the main challenge in public speaking events is to get the audience into a silent state. 20. The Challenge Open Audiences want to be challenged and motivated to contribute to something they feel passionate about. Open your speech with a challenge if you are looking to increase sales, raising money for a project, asking for volunteers, or wanting legislative change. It isn't just about buying into your message but also taking the actions to manifest it. Start your speech with something like this: "Leaders see possibilities where followers see obstacles. I am here today to call for leaders to encourage those who are unsure about the project to look past the stumbling blocks we face in the development of this local park and consider giving citizens a better environment." 21. Multiple Choice Test Presenting your own multiple-choice test can draw your audience to your topic, and this approach is tailor-made for a talk with multiple perspectives about an issue or different solutions to the same problem. An example of this open would be to say the following: "As a company, we have several routes we can take regarding growth and increased sales. We could a) buy smaller companies to diversify our portfolio of services, b) move resources to focus on only a few, or c) we could opt to franchise. After we evaluate these options together, I will offer the option that I think is the way for us to go." 22. The Mystery Open The odds are likely that your audience loves to solve mysteries. Whether they are read in books or watched on television, mysteries grab the attention of people simply because of the uncertainty that is wrapped around them. When using this open present some clues on stage, regardless of which side of the argument they lean towards. Remind the audience of these clues throughout the speech and encourage them to come up with their own conclusions before revealing how your mystery gets solved. 23. Have Audience Members Talk to Each Other All audiences will be sitting close together in a setting where they will be visible in front of you, so you might as well take advantage of this. Encourage people to talk to others that are sitting next to them, and specifically to let them know what they would like to learn from your speech. Encourage your audience to discuss with each other any particular points. Any commands or show of leadership on your part will easily influence the audience, as long as you do it with confidence. 24. Bring Up Statistics Even if you don't bring any charts or graphs to illustrate your points, simply mentioning important statistics will resonate with the audience to get your message across the right way. Statistics have the potential to trigger the emotional appeal of the audience. One example of presenting statistics in your open would be something like: "In 2019 there were 152,000 homeless people roaming the streets in California. By 2025 that number is expected to nearly double." This kind of open highlights the need to address the problem of homelessness because the statistic is powerful, personalized and surprising. 25. The Unexpected Definition Open Dictionaries are obviously accurate, but there are times when words gain more power when they are redefined. If you are a valedictorian and you want to share how much your fellow students mean to you, the open can go like this: "The dictionary defines classmate as a member of your class, but my definition for you all is much broader than that. We were friends, teammates, and mentors. As worthy opponents, we challenged each other on the field and in the classroom. And, we now can define ourselves as fellow graduates." Conclusion How you start your presentation will depend on what kind of presentation you are giving, and what tone you want to set for your audience. Regardless of which you choose to begin with, incorporating one of these strong tools into your speech ensures that your presentation is a success from the very start.

Mr. Pop Culture | Exploring the World of Pop Culture Pop culture is everywhere. You know it when you come to the Internet, listen to music, watch television, app-gaming or go to a movie, concert, or stage show. You know the artists, the actors and actresses, sports personalities and the games they play. Today, anything with a buzz is deemed pop culture. The book definition says pop culture is a collection of thoughts, ideas, attitudes, perspectives, images (you name it) preferred by the mainstream population, which is a sort of common denominator. The most common pop culture categories are entertainment (movies, music, TV), sports, news (as in people/places in news), politics, fashion/clothes, and technology. Slang has also become popular in our culture as each year seems to have its own slang signature, especially with tweens and teens. Terms such as "going viral" are new pop culture – not only the term but the viral product itself. Each one of us has our own pop-culture menu. Look at your apps, your bookmarks, your songs playlist, TV shows, movies: what you 're saying on your favorite social networks. Smartphones today are the center of your pop culture. If you want to know more about pop culture, read on as we are going to give you its history and different definitions. History of Pop Culture It was in the 19th century when the term "popular culture" was coined. Traditionally, it was associated with poor education and with the lower classes, which is the opposite of the "official culture" and higher education of the upper classes. During the Victorian-era, Britain experienced social changes with the rise of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries, which caused an increase in literacy rates. And with the growth of capitalism and industrialization, people started spending their money on entertainment, such as sports and the commercial idea of pubs. Reading also gained traction, and the Penny serials were published. These were cheap popular serial literature in the United Kingdom. Those were like the Victorian equivalent of video games. It was the first taste of mass-produced popular culture for the young in Britain. With the growing consumer culture and increased capacity for travel via the newly built railway that opened in 1825 in north-east England, a market for cheap popular literature was created with an ability to distribute on a large scale. With this, the first Penny serials were published in the 1830s due to the growing demand. Towards the end of the 19th century, the stress in the distinction from "official culture" became more pronounced. It is a usage that became established by the interbellum period or the period between wars. The meaning of popular culture began to be connected with those of mass culture, consumer culture, media culture, image culture, and culture for mass consumption from the end of World War II, following major cultural and social changes, which were brought by mass media innovations. The abbreviated form "pop" for popular, like in pop music, dates back from the late 1950s. Although not used in our lexicon back then, modern pop culture (as we know it) began with the baby boomer generation and "buying power." As boomers came of age with their disposable incomes – that influence led to the pop culture revolution. It began during the 1950s with rock n' roll, TV, Dick Clark and the hoola hoop, transistor radios, into the 1960s and beyond. The term "pop culture" became mainstream during the 1980s. Before this, we used "popular" to describe things such as top song playlists or "pop" as in art or "best" or "top" selling, as in books. Different Definitions of Pop Culture Based on the author of Cultural Theory and Popular Culture named John Storey, popular culture has different definitions. The quantifiable definition of culture has the problem that much "high culture", such as television dramatizations of Jane Austen, is also "popular." Aside from that, "pop culture" is also defined as the culture that is "leftover" when we have decided what high culture is. But many works overlap the boundaries, such as William Shakespeare, Leo Tolstoy, George Orwell, and Charles Dickens. The third definition of pop culture associates it with "mass culture" and ideas. This is seen as a commercial culture, which is mass-produced for mass consumption by mass media. If you take it from a Western European viewpoint, this can be compared to American culture. Pop culture can also be defined otherwise as an authentic culture of the people. However, this can be challenging because there are a lot of ways to define the "people." According to John Storey, popular culture emerged from the urbanization of the Industrial Revolution. For example, studies of Shakespeare locate much of the characteristic vitality of his drama in its participation in Renaissance popular culture. Other examples are contemporary practitioners like Dario Fo and John McGrath, who use popular culture in a sense that links to ancient folk traditions. Folk culture is at the opposite end of one spectrum from mass culture. As mentioned earlier, mass culture is mass-produced and mass-marketed on a large societal scale. Folk culture, on the other hand, is typically crafted individually, and it is produced and distributed on a local level. This can include folk art, folk music, folk crafts, and folklore. They usually originate from small, regional, or local groups of people, and are considered as representing only those small groups, and are propagating by word of mouth and not via mass media. Pop Culture Through the Decades Pop Culture is like a unifying bridge across time, which brings together generations of diverse backgrounds. Whether looking at the rock 'n' roll revolution of the 1960s or the thriving social networking websites of today, each period in America's cultural history develops its own exceptional take on the qualities that define our lives. Here's an overview of the pop culture from the 1950s to the 2010s: The 1950s Pop Culture The 1950s were a decade marked by the post-World War II boom. Pop Culture and Technology Pop culture played a crucial role in the advancement of technology in each decade. In fact, technology is becoming more and more important and prevalent in all aspects of our culture. Pop culture has inspired and continues to inspire technological innovation. It draws connections between interpretations of technologies from the past and their modern counterparts. With this, let us look into the technologies that became prevalent from the 1950s to the 2010s. Technology in the 1950s When it comes to technology, the 1950s was a crucial period, especially in the world of radio and television. It has brought about the advancement in the viewing and listening experience of people at home. This decade was a breakthrough year for television. It was this time when the first commercially available color TV was introduced. Aside from that, the first commercially available computer in the world was also presented in the 1950s. In the music industry, the 45rpm vinyl records became as common as 78rpm records. In fact, it became popular due to its compact size and durability. The 33rpm vinyl record also became popular, and it replaced the 78rpm as the most common vinyl record size in the world. Aside from these, many other innovations were introduced in the 1950s, such as the first accurate atomic clock, the videotape, stereo vinyl records, and more. To know more about the technology in the 1950s, you can read our 1950s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 1960s The 1960s was also a great decade for television, as there were also many enhancements done to make the experience of watching TV shows at home better. Even though this decade was dominated by television, there were also improvements done to the radio industry. During the 1960s, the television served as the gateway for Americans to know the presidential election candidates, which were Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. Their debates were broadcasted, which helped the people decide who they'll vote to be the next US president. It was also in the 60s when the push-button telephone was invented and introduced by the Bell System. This replaced rotary phonesand was faster and easier to use. The first compact cassette was also released in this decade. Radios with transistors also became more popular in this decade. Their durability helped the radio industry have a surge in listeners in the same era where the British Invasion was at the peak of its popularity. FM radio was also becoming the number one choice of listeners who were looking into listening to classical music. To know more about the technologies introduced in the 1960s, read our 1960s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 1970s The 1970s was a prime period for television because a lot of manufacturers tried to push the boundaries of color TV to produce better reception and clearer resolution. But aside from television, computers also had a significant advancement in this decade. It is because of the introduction to the Xerox PARC, which was the first computer that was designed to support an operating system or OS based on a graphical user interface. This computer would later become the inspiration behind some of the most iconic computers in the history of technology. It was also in this same decade when Microsoft was formed by Bill Gates and researcher Paul Allen. Another important creation in the 1970s was the Universal Product Code or UPC. It allowed systematic pricing and tracking for products in grocery stores and other establishments. The first product to be UPC scanned was a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum in Ohio. If you're craving to know more about the technologies invented and introduced in the 1970s, then you should read our 1970s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 1980s The 1980s, when it comes to technology, has been a great decade for the computer and the music industry. Both of these fields have benefitted from the technological advancements brought by engineers and scientists who wanted to make life more convenient. It was in the 80s when Bill Gates agreed to provide the operating system for IBM's personal computer. That operating system was the PC DOS 1.0, which was modified to be compatible with the IBM Personal Computer. Aside from that, this decade was also important for the creation of the internet. Tim Berners-Lee, a previous independent contractor at CERN, started experimenting on improving the communication between researchers from different places. His experimentation led to ENQUIRE, which was a software project that serves as the predecessor for the World Wide Web. Aside from these, many other developments for the computer were introduced in the 1980s. Some of these include the creation of Apple computers, Macintosh personal computer, and the introduction of the Power Windows by Microsoft. To know more about these, you can read our 1980s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 1990s The 1990s has been a turning point in the computer industry. This decade brought major technological advancements to the personal computer. Aside from that, it also showed how Microsoft became a powerhouse in the world of software. At the start of the decade, Adobe Inc. released the Adobe Photoshop 1.0 software. It was a graphics editor programmed by Thomas Knoll. The third iteration of the Windows OS, Windows 3.0, was also released by Microsoft in the 1990s, together with a new presentation program called Microsoft PowerPoint, bundled with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. The World Wide Web was also formed after Tim Berners-Lee utilized and tweaked the ENQUIRE system. This was considered to be the first web browser. The first Pentium chip was also released in this decade by the Inter Corporation. It would eventually include some of their best-selling microprocessors. In 1994, Amazon was launched by Jeff Bezos, and would eventually become one of the biggest companies in the world. In the same year, Sony released its first home video game console, the PlayStation, first in Japan, and in the US after a year. There are many other wonderful technological creations that were introduced in the 1990s. If you are curious about them, read our 1990s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 2000s When it comes to technology, the 2000s was a groundbreaking decade. It was the time where certain inventions have revolutionized the different sectors of technology, such as web browsing, gaming, and as well as mobile communications. Before the year 2000 came, people were afraid of the Y2K Problem. This was a proposed event wherein computers may not be able to handle the change from 1999 to 2000 because of an error in the algorithm. With this, people believed there would be a collapse in the economy as most companies and agencies rely on computers. Fortunately, a lot of organizations were able to upgrade their computer systems, which eliminated the threat. This decade was great for gaming because Sony released the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3, while Microsoft launched the Xbox and the Xbox 360. People also had a new way to listen to music when Apple Inc. successfully launched iTunes, which was a media player and library. After that, Apple also released the first-generation iPod. During these times, Google was becoming a big company, but Yahoo was still at the top as the number one search engine in the world. There are also media services providers who were experiencing a rise in profits, and one of those is Netflix. It was also in the 2000s when YouTube was established. There are many other innovations that were introduced in the 2000s. If you want to know more about them, read our 2000s Technology News In Review. Technology in the 2010s The 2010s decade was not as impactful as the previous decades when it comes to technology, but there were still a few breakthroughs that have been introduced. At the start of the decade, Apple was already selling over 250 million Apple iPods. Google, on the other hand, started expanding its business when they announced that they'd be selling their own mobile phones. Social media has been prevalent in the 2010s, and Facebook has surpassed Google when it comes to website visits per year. But Facebook eventually found its competitors when Instagram and Pinterest were launched in the same year. In the world of mobile phones, the 4G broadband cellular network became popular. Cloud services were also becoming popular in 2011. With this, Apple released its own Cloud service called iCloud. But it was also in the same year when Apple's co-founder, Steve Jobs, passed away. In the gaming industry, Sony released the PlayStation 4 in 2013and eventually became the second best-selling video game console of all time next to PlayStation 2. There are many other developments in technology that have been done in the 2010s, aside from what we've mentioned here. To know more about them, read our 2010s Technology News In Review. Conclusion Pop culture is something that constantly evolves and occurs uniquely in place and time. It forms currents and swirls and represents a complex of equally inter-reliant perspectives and values that influence society and its institutions in different ways. Pop culture has affected and is continuously affecting all of us. We may not think about it that much, but it is everywhere around us. From the way we dress, the gadgets and technologies we use every day, the books we read, the movies we watch, the music we listen to, and more.Pop culture is fun, fascinating, and is at the center of our lives. Test yourself. The last time you spoke to your good friend, wasn't pop culture part of that conversation?

Earth Lover's Life | Collected Writings During this Covid-19 pandemic, there are many more unknowns than knowns. People all over the globe are working to find solutions but are hampered by lack of data because this virus is so new to humans. So the logical thing to do while waiting for science to catch up, is to look at existing remedies that help boost your immune system. That is why health authorities are telling us to wash our hands (soap and water disable the outer covering of the virus), not touch our faces (the threat is that the virus may infect the lungs) and physically distance from other people (the virus is airborne and may be transmitted by people who have no symptoms). This article will look at existing data and possible remedies, keeping in mind that these things may change as more data and solutions become available. Animals Scientists believe the virus originated in bats and then either jumped onto humans or travelled through an intermediary animal in the environment of the wildlife market in Wuhan, China. In spite of the panic that ensued, companion pets such as cats and dogs are not able to transmit Covid-19 to humans according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, Centers for Disease Control, and the US Department of Agriculture as quoted by Nathan Winograd. Factory farm opponents note that other viruses have jumped to humans from farmed animals and the massive use of antibiotics in farmed animals encourages antimicrobial resistance. Wildlife advocates say healthy wildlife ecosystems "can restrain" pathogens. However, a tiger in the Bronx zoo testing positive has led to concerns that humans can transmit Covid-19 to animals. The Zoological Pathology Program at the University of Illinois Veterinary School makes the point that tigers are not the same genus as domestic cats and considers human to pet transmission unlikely though some vets suggest extra caution and not snuggling with your pets if you are ill. Shelters have been happily surprised by the widespread fostering and adoption of shelter animals during this time as companion animals help ease the stress of quarantine. So it is important to not undermine this with baseless rumours of human-animal transmission. Plots and Theories Differences in data collection, Covid-19 testing methods and strategies have made comparisons of data across countries difficult. Case in point is the new edict of the US Centers of Disease Control to list cause of death as Covid-19 even if only presumed. But widespread distrust of government, big business and individuals have filled the gap. Some of the theories are: 1) The virus was deliberately invented and loosed; 2) The pandemic is an excuse to take away personal liberties; 3) The pandemic is a plot to smear Donald Trump before the US election; 4) The pandemic is a plot by Bill Gates and the pharmaceutical companies he invested in to create a depopulation vaccine; 5) and my own observation in British Columbia, that pipeline layers allowed to continue working through Indigenous territory (with those Indigenous having extra health concerns and poor living conditions) have a likelihood of causing genocide which would reduce future opposition to the invasion of extractive industries. I'm not saying yay or nay to any of these. You decide. Natural Remedies This is the part where I say I am merely an animal rescuer, not a doctor nor veterinarian. Neither the US FDA nor Health Canada have evaluated the following statements. However, years of exploring natural remedies for myself and my animals, have shown me that there are many useful remedies that could also be tried with Covid-19. For the sake of transparency, I'll also point out here, that I am an affiliate marketer for some frequency remedies. Herbs Many people are familiar antiviral herbs and mushrooms. You will notice many are used in food preparation as spices. Your immune system is based in your gut, so food becomes medicinal. Except when you have allergies to certain foods. Then you need to remove those allergens from your diet. In my case, I am allergic to milk products. Milk products in general produce mucus and are less healthy than the dairy industry would like you to believe. Some people are lactose-intolerant and the milk will give tummy aches or indigestion. I found I am allergic to a milk protein called casein (in both cow and goat milk) which makes me congested and sniffly. For some unknown reason, some "fake cheese" or "dairy alternatives" contain casein. So you need to check product labels when substituting foods to avoid allergic reaction. Vitamins & Supplements Vitamins and supplements can also support your immune system. Vitamin C is well-known for boosting immunity and intravenous vitamin C (as sodium ascorbate) is how Wuhan, China is now treating Covid-19. Some naturopaths and veterinarians in North America administer intravenous vitamin C but with all the clinic closures now, that treatment may be hard to find. Zinc is also well known for reducing respiratory symptoms. Negative Ions Negative ion generators are rarely considered in this context but may help with stress during seclusion and possibly with disabling viruses. The negative ions combine with particulate matter in the air (such as dust, mold spores, pet dander, bacteria and viruses) giving it a negative charge so falls out of the air, to be cleaned up by your vacuuming or dusting. As such, they are a type of air purifier. Negative ion generators produce negative ions by adding an electron to an air molecule thus giving it a negative charge. You may have experienced negative ions near moving water: a waterfall, a storm, or even in your shower. There are many types of negative ion generators on the market but you need to research which ones are healthier. Some are said to use radioactive materials and some also generate ozone which above certain levels is unhealthy for you and can be very unhealthy for your pets. When my old ionizer wore out, I replaced it with an air purifier when I noticed my cats coughing. That helped somewhat but after the purifier wore out, I recently replaced it with a very small and inexpensive negative ion generator. I confirmed with the manufacturer that it does not generate ozone, and it works via the small needles said to not require radioactive materials. I notice a positive mood effect on myself and the animals as well as less coughing and sneezing. Homeopathy Homeopathic remedies are pooh-poohed by some because they work on completely different principles than accepted western medicine. However they are a main go-to for me and my animals because I've seen them work. You can purchase them in health food stores and some (usually compounding) pharmacies. You avoid touching them with your fingers. Speaking with a homeopathically -- educated friend, we agreed both of us would reach for aconitum napellus or gelsemium sempervirens. These can also be given to animals. Aconitum is taken at the very first symptoms of feeling ill. Once while working overnight as a hotel desk clerk, I gave one pill to the security guard when he started his rounds. He had just started to sniffle. Next night he wanted to know what I gave him because he said the symptoms were gone when he got home. Gelsemium is taken for general flu-like symptoms (and also for "kitty flu"). Frequencies My other main go-to, as many people know, is frequencies. Frequency developers have invested their energies in specific frequencies to fight Covid-19. A YouTube search for covid-19 frequencies will show the efforts of many different developers. Bear in mind that you require headphones if you are listening to binaural beat frequencies. This is because they work by supplying a slightly different tone to each ear thus prompting your brain to supply a third tone between the first two. Spooky2 is a manufacturer of small Rife frequency machines and offers a silent Covid-19 frequency here. CoronaFrequencies.com offers a download here. Eric Thompson of Subtle Energy Sciences has produced free audio and image-encoded Covid-19 frequencies, downloadable here. SES also has audio and image frequencies called Virtual Oxygen, which I found very helpful a couple years ago when my area was getting air quality warnings due to drifting smoke from the wildfires. Sharry Edwards, who analyzes frequencies in your voice, believes from her research (though I don't agree with all of her methods and conclusions) that glutathione is helpful against the virus. Dietary glutathione is poorly absorbed but SES provides an energy app of glutathione. SES also provides energy apps for a number of herbs that may be helpful including curcumin and ashwagandha. What You Personally Can Do All by Yourself These other items may also prove helpful. That is, keeping the humidity of your environment at a comfortable level and learning this breathing technique. It is also helpful to control your stress level and the body chemicals generated by stress. Check out the GreenMed database for other ways to fight Covid-19.

Lima is the beautiful and vibrant capital of Peru. Situated along the arid desert coast of Peru it has developed into the top culinary hub for South America, hosting 3 restaurants in the "Top 50 Best Restaurants" list. Let us just say that travelers to Lima should bring loose-fitting pants and large appetites. The Limeños (people from Lima) love to eat well and they do not hide it as the restaurant's of Lima are always packed with families devouring all the delicious culinary delights that Peru has to offer. If you are going to travel through Lima and don't know what to eat, here are 7 Peruvian dishes you must try while visiting Lima. The Top 7 Peruvian Dishes You Must Try Ceviche Ceviche is probably one of the most popular Peruvian dishes to come out of Peruvian cuisine and is still popular amongst the locals. Typically enjoyed during lunch, it is a refreshing dish for those hot Peruvian summers. Ceviche or cebiche is made up of seafood cooked in a lime-based sauce known as leche de tigre or tiger's milk. The fish is prepared by chopping it roughly and letting it cook in the citric acid of the leche de tigre sauce. Along with the fish, the dish is topped with an onion salsa, boiled choclo corn and sweet potato. Ceviche is light, bright and a very refreshing dish that can be found throughout the city. Make sure to enjoy it while sipping on some pisco or a local larger. Head to El Muelle Cebicheria in the beautiful neighborhood of Barranco. This local spot is always crowded with families, so expect to wait. If you are with a group, I suggest ordering one of their large ceviches as it is enough to feed a small army. El Muelle Jr. Alfonso Ugarte 206, Lima 15063, Peru Conchas a la Parmesana Conchas a la Parmesana is one of the best simple snacks to enjoy with a beer. It is simply scallops on the half-shell with melted parmesan on top and a little olive oil. This dish is just another example of the wonderful ingredients the Peruvians pull from the Pacific Ocean and the delicious simplicity of Peruvian dishes. Head over to Punto Azul in Miraflores for some fantastic concha a la parmesana as well as other traditional Peruvian dishes. This is a very popular stop for both locals and tourist alike. Don't let the wait discourage because it is well worth it. Punto Azul Calle San Martin 595, Miraflores 15074, Perú Tiradito Continuing down the path of the ceviche family, you will find tiradito. According to urban legend, tiradito was invented by the local fisherman or pescadores. As they would clean their morning catch they would cut off thin slices, toss them onto the hot coastal rocks to lightly sear them, and with a squeeze of lime juice eat them right there. What separates tiraditos from ceviche is the thin cut. Tiraditos is cut sashimi style in the Japanese tradition*. Then they cover the fish with a lime-based sauce to cook. This is a popular dish at both traditional and modern restaurants. We suggest heading to Hanzo in San Isidro for some fantastic Nikkei cuisine and of course tiraditos. *In Peru it is very common to find Japanese, Peruvian fusion called Nikkei. Hanzo Av. Los Conquistadores 598, San Isidro 15073, Peru Anticuchos Anticuchos is the must-try dish on this list when coming to Lima. It is their ultimate street food that has a long history in Peru. Anticuchos are beef hearts that are grilled with different spices on a hot grill off the flame. Don't let the beef heart scare you off. You would have no idea that this savory meat was heart if I didn't tell you. Just order three to six sticks of Anticuchos, dip them in their spicy yellow pepper sauce, and enjoy. Anticuchos can be found throughout the city but we suggest heading to Anticuchos Grimanesa. This was once a street stand but it got so popular that the owner was forced by the city to open up her own place due to the congestion in the streets, so you know it's good. Anticuchos Grimanesa Calle Ignacio Merino 466, Miraflores 15074, Perú Lomo Saltado Lomo Saltado simply put is the Peruvian version of stir-fry. A popular cuisine in Peru is chifa, the fusion of Peruvian and Chinese cuisine. As you wander the streets of Lima you will find chifa restaurants all over the city. One of the more popular dishes to come out of this is Lomo Saltado which can be found in local bodegas and chifa restaurants alike. Lomo Saltado is simply beef cooked in spices, onions, peppers and the Peruvian saltado sauce. The stir-fry is plated with fries and rice and there you have it: lomo saltado! It is a fantastic cheap dish to fill you up. Head to Las Mesitas in the neighborhood of Barranco for some fantastic Lomo Saltado. This is an old school restaurant that will have all the Peruvian greats when it comes to food. Las Mesitas Av. Almte. Miguel Grau 341, Lima 15063, Perú Causa Causas are little Peruvian stacks of heaven that any traveler serious about eating in Peru needs to try. Peru is the potato capital of the world and this dish shows how they are the masters of preparing them as well. Traditionally causas are prepared by layering chilled mashed potatoes with layers of avocado and shredded chicken to create heaven. However, today they can come filled with many different ingredients including shrimp, white fish, octopus, and crab. No matter what you order it will always be a stack fluffy potatoes, avocado, and a tasty filling. Lunchtime on the weekend is the best time to enjoys these Peruvian towers and make sure to get a pisco sour to wash it all down. Stop in at Canta Rana in Barranco for lunch to try these delicious stacks of heaven! Canta Rana Genova 101, Barranco 15063, Perú Picarones Let us finish off this list with a tasty doughy dessert. Picarones is the Peruvian doughnut. They are delicious little rings of fried dough made from wheat flour and pumpkin and then topped with a sugar cane syrup called chancaca. Picarones can be found everywhere both in restaurants and on the streets. One of the best times to go and enjoy these treat is at the weekend evening street market in the center of Barranco. If you happen to miss it though head to El Tìo Mario to try this sweet Peruvian dish. El Tìo Mario is also famous for anticuchos so order up some more of that delicious beef heart and finish the night off with Picarones! Anticucheria El Tio Mario Paseo Chabuca Granda, Distrito de Lima 15063, Perú It is difficult, to sum up this gastronomic brilliance of Peru and Lima in just 7 Peruvian dishes but this list is a great start for your culinary adventure. For any traveler who travels for food, Lima is the city for you! Building up your vocabulary in a foreign language can take a long time and mastering vocabulary is a difficult memory task. Spaced repetition is a learning technique that incorporates increasing intervals of time between subsequent reviews of previously learned material; this exploits the psychological spacing effect. 430GT - Motorcycle Riding Life | Get on your bike - Safely and Enjoyably Few things are more exhilarating than driving down the open road on a motorcycle. Motorcycles are highly maneuverable in the hands of a skilled rider. At the same time, riders are always at risk of being involved in an accident. Motorcycles are smaller than passenger cars, which makes them difficult for other drivers to see. Even if you have experience driving a car, you will need to take a test before you can legally ride on the streets because operating a motorcycle requires unique skills. Here are some simple tips to help you pass your motorcycle rider test. You will need to pass your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). Make sure you are able to identify all the different road signs even if you have had a regular driver's license for many years. There are probably some signs that you have not seen in a long time. You will need to know all the rules of the road, safety rules specific to motorcycles, and best practices as they relate to riding technique. [hungryfeed url=" item_fields="title,description" max_items="3"] You can find a variety of practice tests online. Take as many as you can before going in for the real test. This will boost your confidence and ensure you can pass the written exam the first time you take it. After passing the CBT, you must demonstrate your skills by taking the driving test. The main testing element of this will take place on open roads so ensure you are confident in moving traffic. If possible, it is best to take the test on a small motorcycle that handles well. This will give you more control when it comes to driving around cones or demonstrating similar maneuvers. You are not required to use your own motorcycle, so you can borrow one if you need to. Inspect the motorcycle before you show up for the driving skills test. You want to make sure that all the lights, including the turn signals, brake lights, and headlight are working properly. Inspect the brakes and throttle linkage so you will not have to deal with any type of mechanical failure during the exam. You also want to make sure the horn works. Do this inspection approximately one week beforehand to give yourself enough time to make any necessary repairs. Wear the proper safety gear when you show up for the exam. Goggles will protect the eyes from insects and flying debris while offering you optimum visibility. Wear a good pair of gloves that give you plenty of grip on the handlebars. Sturdy boots will keep your feet firmly planted on the pegs. You do not want anything to interfere with your ability to move. Even if you feel you are a skilled rider, you should set aside time to practice. Sometimes the most basic things, such as parallel parking, U-turns, and three point turns are more difficult to do when you are nervous. If you have enough practice, everything will be second nature and you will not have to worry about freezing up when it counts. Abrupt braking and other jerky motions can result in a poor score. Practice braking smoothly to eliminate any wobbling. Listen carefully to the examiner as he or she explains each exercise. Do not be afraid to ask questions if something is not clear to you. All maneuvers take place at low speeds, so any rider with basic skills should have no problem executing the various maneuvers. It is only natural to feel nervous when you know someone is going to be judging your performance. Do what you can to stay relaxed. The more nervous you are, the more likely you will make silly mistakes. Before climbing on the cycle, utilize some relaxation techniques. Take deep breaths and focus completely on the task before you. Think about all the fun you will have after you receive your license. Taking the motorcycle skills test may be challenging but it will be well worth the effort if you are successful. Just remember to study the handbook and take multiple practice exams before the written test. Ride as much as you can before the driving exam so everything you have to do is automatic without having to think about it. Keep your eyes on the prize and you will be successful. Panini Days | Panini Press Reviews Have you tried creating a sandwich using a panini press? Needless to say, this easy-to-operate but versatile kitchen equipment will make your sandwich even more special. But first, why a sandwich? Well, it is a great choice for any busy person who has very little time to cook, or someone who decided to go on a healthy diet in order to lose excessive weight. A sandwich is definitely an ideal, appealing treat that mothers can serve their kids after a busy afternoon at play. With maybe a vegetable or chicken salad on the side, a sandwich can also become a main meal for many, especially during breakfast or lunch time, that part of the day when we all require the calories and energy to go on through the rest of the day. Clearly, sandwiches are a great option as something to fill up our hungry tummies. But hey, we can make it much more special by using a panini maker. Check out this panini press Why use a Panini Maker It is already said that panini makers are versatile, simply because not only do they create delicious paninis and sandwiches, but they also cook other types of food – chicken and fish fillet, pork chops, lamb meat, veggies. All these and a lot more can be grilled to perfection. Secondly, for many moms out there – it is really difficult to feed kids these days. They tend to lean more to salty, oily, unhealthy junk foods like chips and chocolates, just so they can quickly stave off their hunger and continue playing on the backyard with their friends. Sandwiches made using a panini grill, however, makes them a lot more appealing. They comes out hot and mouth-watering, what with the dark brown charred lines on both surfaces that are created by the grooves on both the grill's top and bottom plates. Thirdly, there's no spill of any ingredient, such mayonnaise or meat or vegetable bits, that will mess up your kitchen counter. How? The machine will press down on the sandwich and everything in between. After just a quick time of pressing, you have evenly hot salami or ham slices as well as perfectly melted cheese inside, while your golden brown, charred-lined sandwich bread is looking really good on the outside. A simple cheese sandwich will do For me, my hunger is more than satisfied by chomping on a simple cheese sandwich. I love it when it comes with some butter, and also a rich spread of mayonnaise on both slices. Of course, it is not complete without heating it on my special grill. This makes the sandwich all the more mouthwatering – a delicious and satisfying treat made even better by a dependable panini press. Order one at Amazon

This way you can provide your body with a bunch of nutrients that can be absorbed easily and you are providing your body with clean energy without any sugar and caffeine. Around 15 to 20 minutes after taking up the juice cleanse you will feel the energy that it will provide you. 3. No More Inflammation According to the scientific study, it has been concluded that juice cleanse along with a plant-based diet can reduce inflammation of the body. Most of us are experiencing chronic inflammation due to various reasons. The body is responding to all the bad conditions and toxins by inflaming itself. However, juice cleanse can help the body to clean up and cut out all those toxins to absorb all the beneficial nutrients. You can also control allergies by having a completely plant-based diet. If you're not making a juice cleanse at your home then you can try a few of them available in the market. 4. Healthy weight loss If you want to achieve a more balanced diet, there's no healthier way to get more nutrients than do a juice clean. It also helps you eliminate processed food, refined carbs and unhealthy fats from your diet, replacing them with plant-based foods that help you lose weight naturally. A portion of this weight loss is related to water retention but maintaining a plant-based diet long enough after the cleanse can deliver a sustained weight loss. 5. Stay hydrated Did you know that the average American consumes less than the daily recommended five to six glasses of non-caffeinated fluids? Low-sugar, cold-pressed juices can help add to your fluid intake while improving energy, helping the body function efficiently, and removing free radicals. You can even add water to your juice cleanse regime. Hydration is essential for delivering healing nutrients to your cells, which can help you feel and look great. That's why there's a thing called juice cleanse glow. Shetland Wool Week | Shetland Wool Week is a world renowned celebration of Britain's most northerly native sheep, the Shetland textile industry and the rural farming community on these islands Welcome to our November blog which seems to have come around all too soon. As has been the case of seemingly every other month this year, life continues to remain predictably unpredictable around the world, with many of us back in lockdown or adjusting to the ever-changing rules and regulations during this challenging time. While the freedom of spontaneity currently eludes us, it seems like the most meaningful way forward is to embrace a spirit of acceptance and the hope that 'this too shall pass'. In Shetland the short days and long nights have started to set in and at times it is tempting to retreat and close the doors, but now, more than ever, it seems essential to continue to reach out, stay connected, and keep moving. We've been reading various articles on the 'Art of Wintering' which address the 'fallow periods of life' when it's important for us to indulge in a bit of repair time. So we're stockpiling the freezer, building up the wool reserves, noting down books to be read, researching festive recipes, and trying to continue the daily routine of getting outside and absorbing as much natural light as possible. This can be a challenge when there's a force 9 'blowing a hoolie', but it's exhilarating and life-affirming - and there is always the calm after the storm to look forward to. Photos by Alex Mazurov Shetland Wool Week online 2020 has in many ways forced us to approach things differently, to rapidly adapt and learn new skills. We were delighted to bring you a Shetland Wool Week of sorts this year virtually. It put many of us beyond our comfort zones and it was difficult to know whether we would be able to meaningfully capture the excitement, personality and breadth of SWW. But what was achieved was in many ways a true reflection of the ethos of the festival, with so many people generously stepping forward to offer their time, share skills and talk with passion about Shetland and give a taste of what happens during a typical Wool Week. It was a busy nine days for us to deliver it all digitally but it was an honour to share such rich content. Thanks for joining us, and here are just some of the comments we received: Thank you so much for the programme you put forward. It was great. High quality and you managed a real Wool Week flavour to it. So very inspiring! I learned many new things from this video, thank you so much. This was lovely. Really enjoyed learning the history and seeing the creativity involved. It is inspirational to even those of us who live far away today. What a gift you all bring. I was at Wool Week last year and had such a great experience. I've knit the Katie's Kep with all the beautiful yarns that I brought home from your beautiful islands. I've always wanted to go to the Shetland Wool Week and this fabulous video has confirmed my feelings that Shetland is truly a knitter's paradise. For someone way on the other side of the world who hasn't been more than 30 miles from home since March, your efforts to bring Wool Week to us is such a gift and appreciated more that you can imagine. Thank you so very much. Watch here If you were unable to join us much of the content is still available to view via our Shetland Amenity Trust YouTube channel and also on our Instagram IGTV. So whether you're looking for tips on how to create the perfect thumb; hints on how to simplify grafting, observations on Fair Isle knitting; or thoughts on what makes the native Shetland sheep wool so very special; there is something for everyone, with lots of Shetland scenery, chat and good humour thrown in too. Shetland Wool Week Annual 2020 Image on the right by @ullstugan Straight on the back of Shetland Wool Week we were busy fulfilling orders of the SWW Annual 2020. Thank you to all of you who have bought it so far, and for those patiently waiting for their copy. We are on top of all our orders, so if you would like to buy one (more!) for yourself or as a festive gift, now is the time! The Annual is £21 and can be bought here. Filled with original knitwear (and weaving) designs and features, it's packed with inspiration and is a beautiful collector's item too. It has been so gratifying to see it in your hands and already projects are beginning to come off the wires which we are sharing via our social media. Check out our blog too for more images of works in progress and finished projects. Remember to share your knitting projects with us too using #shetlandwoolweekannual2020 and the name of the design. Images from top: Jolene Clark in her Radiant Star Cowl by Ella Gordon; a blue Peerie Leaves Jumper (Ella Gordon Designs) knit by Sarah Moran of @didyoumakeityourself; @vonpoppie rocking her Da Skaw Beret by Angela Irvine; and Marta of @mrsdaftspaniel in her colourful Mirknen Dags designed by Elizabeth Johnston. Be inspired by the Shetland Wool Week Annual knitwear designers Watch: Many of the designers also recorded us a short video introducing themselves, explaining the inspiration behind their piece and also a few tips along the way. You can watch them on our SWW Instagram IGTV and Shetland Amenity Trust YouTube channel. Hear from Donna Smith; Rachel Hunter; Terri Malcolmson; Emma Geddes; Alison Rendall, Elizabeth Johnston; Ella Gordon Our Shetland Wool Week Annual technical editor Steph Boardman has also written a really helpful post on Alyssa Malcolmson's 'Bosie Gloves', which are featured in the Annual. Steph casts her analytical eyes over the design, and takes a closer look at some of the smaller details as well as offering alternative colours inspiration. Acts of Kindness – A Peerie Hansel fae Hame (A little gift from home) Throughout this year, we have seen many acts of kindness, from people helping their neighbours, collecting shopping and prescriptions, or simply by reaching out and keeping in touch. As an island community one group of people in our thoughts during lockdown has been our young people who have travelled off island to study at university. For many this has been their first time away from home. When our colleagues at the Shetland Museum learnt that around 400 Shetland students on the mainland were unable to travel home, they decided to set up a community project to express its support by sending a peerie 'hansel' (gift) from home. The idea for the appeal was inspired by a Fair Isle jumper on display in the Shetland Museum galleries. The much loved and well-worn jumper was a comforting reminder of home for its owner, a WW2 soldier, whilst he was away from Shetland. A local appeal was set up asking for donations of knitted hats, scarves, gloves, socks or a headband which would be passed on to students nominated by families or friends. The result was an impressive array of hand knitted items made with love. There are some beauties there and we are a teensy bit envious of the recipient. They are now all packed up with a few extra Shetland treats ready to make their journey south. A huge thank you to everyone involved and for restoring our faith in the kindness of others. NEW PATTERN: Katie's Cowl We have also launched another woolly project of our own. Wilma Malcolmson has created a final pattern as part of her 'Katie's' series. It has been unusual for our SWW patron not to have attended a physical event, but Wilma has been working away behind the scenes on this new pattern, amongst many other projects, just in time for the colder season. We've already shared her wonderful Katie's Kep and Fingerless Gloves; and now we bring you her Katie's Cowl just in time for winter. The pattern features three different colourways from Jamieson's of Shetland; Jamieson and Smith; and Uradale Yarns. It's a lovely size that's very versatile and adds a stylish extra layer during the chillier months. The pattern is available to buy for £5 as a digital copy from our online shop, so no postal charges or long wait this time! All proceeds will go back into the event. BUY HERE Shetland Place Names A vast quantity of local Shetland names are preserved in a strong oral tradition. In 2001, Shetland Amenity Trust recognised the importance of recording these before they were lost forever. Eileen Brooke Freeman has been posting weekly place names posts throughout the year which provide vital clues about the environment, history, geography, and the people who lived in Shetland in the past and how they used the land. Painstakingly researched with plenty of images, it's a fascinating series. One of particular interest is on sheep-related place names. Here Eileen talks about the dialect words associated with sheep and wool and particularly the place-names that reflect where sheep grazed, rested or were caaed (rounded up). Lambs and sheep appear frequently too – think of 'Sheep Craig or Sheep's Rock' on Fair Isle, which rises to 132 metres and adjoins Fair Isle by a steep but impassable rocky ridge. Check out the blog post and view some stunning black and white photography from the Shetland photographic archive too. #Wovember Something else we have been following with interest is the #wovember photo campaign on Instagram, led by @unravelfestival. It's been fascinating to see so many references to Shetland Wool Week and Shetland Wool, too. Check out @janettebudge; @shetlandhandspun; @emilycpoleson who have been keeping up with their daily posts or follow #wovember for more insights into the multifaceted world of wool. The contributions are often personal and thought provoking and evoke great emotion, especially when reading of the 'comforting balm' and 'joy' that knitting and wool brings to so many. What a wonderful community to be part of.

Orpington Video and Film Makers | Amateur Film Makers since 1958 Based in Orpington, Kent, UK As you may have been saddened to learn, one of our longest serving members James Morton-Robertson passed away recently from Leukaemia. James Morton-Robertson – Memories from Jane Oliver Chairman of OVFM and personal friend of James. James Morton-Robertson was born on 11th August 1937 and was proud of his Scottish heritage. His broad Scottish accent never left him. As a young man, Jim studied to become a design draughtsman and was part of the production team for the electronic newscaster advertising boards like the one at Piccadilly Circus. Subsequently he set up his own computer software and consultancy business. This is where I first came across him. Some 20 years ago, whilst searching for a firm that could provide a computer with video editing software, I came across Amplix Services, Jim's business and went to see his edit suite set up. It was impressive. Soon I was parting with my well-earned cash. Jim built a high spec graphics computer capable storing and editing huge video files, loading all the software. He provided ongoing support, right to the end of his life, something that cannot be bought. He ran the 'Kemsing Video Club'. I began attending these meeting at his house with his wife Jennifer, Barbara Darby and other like-minded folk. We watched one another's films and discussed how they could be improved. Jim's feedback was blunt, to the point, even harsh at times, but it was honest and what I needed in order to learn and develop my filmmaking skills. James was an accomplished and skilful film maker who enjoyed a challenge. Using his technical 'know how', understanding of camera settings, editing tools and programs, he became an award winning film maker. At OVFM, he wrote articles in the club's 'Viewfinder' magazine, whether to provide training, review software or cinematic films. He took on the 'official' photographer role when asked to. His creative mind came up with all sorts of stories. Sometimes he was called upon as 'speaker' and I remember a session where he unpicked the famous 'shower scene' in Alfred Hitchcock's horror movie 'Psycho'; absolutely fascinating. As a prolific film maker he made films for almost every project evening, right up to our last meeting before lockdown. Having travelled the world extensively, he would treat us to his latest adventures. Australia, New Zealand, Oman, Kuwait, Jordan, Barbados, Sri Lanka, France, Spain, Germany, Ireland, the USA, not forgetting the wine route in South Africa. Another love of his was 'wine'; making it, tasting it and drinking it; he successfully ran the Otford Wine Club for years. With an interest of flying he joined the U3A Aviation section; spending time 'flying' his latest 'simulator' at home. Jim made films with me, Barbara Darby, Hugh Darrington, his first wife Jennifer and others. Jennifer sadly died in 2010. He particularly enjoyed making funny films with Hugh; often using animation and special effects. These fascinated him. 'The Open Road' in which a two 'slugs', narrated by Jim and Jennifer, set off on the open road one bank holiday, only to come to a grinding halt behind a 'snail' interpreted by him as a 'caravan'. What an imagination and what amazing animation skills! In 2015 he married Fran whom he had been friends with for many years. He was proud to be a Scotsman and wore the full Scottish regalia; 'Robertson' tartan, sporran and all' when he wed Fran. Now Fran would feature in his films, and 'Jim' became 'James' to me and a few others, but at OVFM he was still known as 'Jim'. He wasn't shy of acting in front of the camera. He had us in stitches when he donned his Lycra green suit in order to do a disappearing act. He stumbled both physically and in his speech when playing a drunkard in another film and Barbara Darby and I could hardly contain ourselves as we filmed James chasing an imaginary fly around the house trying to swat it with a rolled up newspaper for his film 'Obsession'. He had to have a gory ending, one that would prove he wasn't imagining the fly. He revealed a nasty squashed mess on the newspaper, generated with the use of 'special effects'. The credits included a note at the end of the film 'no fly was harmed in the making of the film'! His popular film 'Whitefella Dreaming' was beautifully narrated by his brother Brian, who having emigrated in Australia as a young man, had the perfect Australian accent to fit the bill. James made hundreds of films. We are privileged to have some of them in the archive. He entered film after film into competitions and with such a broad spectrum, managed to lift every trophy OVFM had on offer, all 12 of them. Very few of us will achieve this in our lifetime. James wasn't restricted to filmmaking; he joined the Otford Art Club and many of his paintings adorned the walls of his home. James taught me to persevere, to take on new challenges and to use gifts; art, storytelling, film making, whatever; to ensure our passion lives on to benefit future generations. This year, to keep up with the latest technology, he was learning DaVinci Resolve and Fusion, new editing programs that are too difficult for many of us to get to grips with. The film that meant the most to James was his award winning 'Hampden P1344'; the aircraft in which his father, James Morton-Robertson, the wireless operator, was shot down in World War II. James was only five at the time his father was killed. He dedicated many years to tracing one survivor, interviewing him, and to following the finding, recovery and restoration of that aircraft, now at the RAF Museum at Cosford. Barbeques, quizzes, garden parties, some with strawberries & cream, others with fish & chips, James accommodated them all in his garden; made even more beautiful by Fran's clever and colourful planting. Chatter, laughter, clanging of glasses is what I'll remember of these occasions, interrupted only by the sound of the Merlin engine of the Spitfire flying overhead, with James admiring it and waving as though it were flying over especially for him. Indeed he was a pilot, having completed his first solo flight in March 1959 in a De Havilland Chipmunk or 'Chippy' as they were known, whilst in the RAF in 1959, a career he didn't pursue. James was recently diagnosed with Leukaemia. He and Fran had hoped they'd get to enjoy at least another six months together. He had fibrosis of the lungs and sadly developed a chest infection. He slipped away peacefully at Pembury Hospital on 10th July 2020, just five weeks after his diagnosis and one month short of his 83rd birthday. James was given a wonderful send off, when Fran, unbeknown to others, had a recording played at the end of his service …… yes, the sound of the unmistakeable Merlin engine of the Spitfire, paying a fitting tribute to him. James leaves a huge void in the world of film making. We will miss him very much. PETER MITCHELL We also lost Peter Mitchell too, who passed away a few weeks ago in hospital. Peter MItchell by Jane Oliver Peter Ronald Michell, was born on 9th July 1936 and enjoyed a happy childhood in the Brockley/Catford area of London. Peter excelled in maths and on leaving school worked in an engineering factory. His two years National Service with the Royal Airforce was spent in the Far East and he had fond memories of this time. On returning to 'civi street' he got a job in the civil engineering department at Imperial College, initially working with concrete and later in administration, where he served on a number of committees and joined the college's Holland Club. He gave loyal service to Imperial College, whose focus, amongst other things, is in engineering, remaining there for the rest of his working life. Indeed it was here that he met his wife, Janet. Rumour has it that he wooed her over breakfast! They married at the end of August 1974. He and Janet travelled throughout Europe and also went to America, during their happy years of marriage. Janet would spend time focusing on her love of Bonsai, whilst Peter focused his attention on capturing photographic records of these holidays. Peter belonged to a number of clubs, including dining clubs, computer clubs, camera clubs and OVFM. His great love was photography. He always had his camera with him, taking photos, composing each shot to give the best image, developing them and exhibiting them, winning many awards for his work. At OVFM, whilst he did not produce films, he enjoyed watching those of other club members, joining in constructive feedback to filmmakers. He was a regular attendee, only missing evenings through holidays or illness. He introduced us to a speaker from his computer club, Andrew Bishop, a professional animator, who fascinated us with his wonderful mind boggling creations. We, at OVFM, will remember Peter as a quiet, calm and mild mannered gentleman who, over coffee, would share his love of the Japanese Bonsai garden he had created for and with his wife Janet, whom he adored. Peter was a Charlton Athletic fan, something he kept close to his chest, maybe having witnessed the banter and torment that rival supporters of Arsenal and Chelsea levelled at one another from time to time. In recent years Peter was living with the effects of bladder cancer for which he had undergone radiotherapy treatment. Peter had become increasingly weak and tired. He spent the last two weeks of his life in Darenth Valley Hospital. He had suffered a collapsed lung and sadly passed away on 8th June 2020, one month short of his 84th birthday. Peter will be sadly missed at the club and we offer his wife Janet our sincere condolences. OVFM sends out condolences to the family and friends of both Jim and Peter and if you have any memories or messages you wish to share about Jim and Peter, please reply to this post below. Thanks for reading.

| Follow us on Our Journey To Smile ! Join us to say #Enough! | Follow us on Our Journey To Smile ! Join us to say #Enough! https://youtu.be/rFxtwQtievk Nemat, who has muscular dystrophy, and whose family members were all Covid-19 infected, read a poem he wrote, entitled "Love In The Time Of Covid-19". Love in Time of COVID-19 By Nemat, Afghanistan In time of COVID-19 you can't turn the clock back. In such times you just question the world wordlessly. In quarantine, no one cares. It's difficult, especially when your legs don't function as they should. Who can understand me? Helpless, I could not protest How could you protest, if you were poor, if you were physically challenged? How could you protest, if people could but would not hear you, if people could but would not love you, if they were divorced from reality? Most of all, how could you protest if you were born differently-abled? What a terrible mistake my birth must have been, lacking love from the scratch. In times like these, I am left all alone. But not lonely, as the stars are with me. Times like these are an opportunity to learn that when love enters from the door, hatred should escape from the window. In times like these, I open my heart to love and feed my soul with love dew. I am waiting for love to enter and chase the hatred away. ______________________________________________________________________________ To learn from friends across the world, join the Relational Learning Circles at https://www.relationallearningproject.com By Dr Hakim Young 29 September 2020 Dear friends, Within every person are many 'live' story books that others can learn from. Often, too busy, or afraid, we pass them by. An Afghan Peace Volunteer, Bismillah, once taught me, "For decades, we Afghans have survived war, so by the time Afghans are my age, each of our lives is more than one book, filled with untold joys and pain." We aren't the ones to open these human books. They open themselves. We read them, not only with our sight, but also with our ears and hearts. We understand more when we listen, and refuse to judge. We receive these human books, their music, disappointments and liberation. If we catch their kindness, we reflect some back as well. If we're absorbed in our own world, we lose their world. They are gifts, not transactions. They are not as organized as encyclopedias. How can they be when they are breathing realities, alive and growing by the day? Imagine, 7.8 billion volumes, interconnected through relationships! It's like magic, only it's not, because each human-to-human connection is an everyday human reach for love. Maryam, an Afghan Peace Volunteer in Kabul, Cameron, a U.S. citizen in California, and Ivan, a Russian in St Petersburg, did just that. They reached out, skipped numerous historical, political and social barriers, and conversed about "a hopeful future". A shared "thirst for peace". Cameron remarked, "I think it's very important to have these conversations, not only between young people but also between people of all ages all across the world," Cameron said. "It's the power of humanizing one another. I don't think it can ever be surpassed." Some Afghan Peace Volunteers have testified how these conversations and relationships constitute "a better university than any other" and are "richer than what they learned through their years of formal education". Over the past 10 years, the Volunteers and international partners have had the joy of growing different forms of in-person and online conversations, like Global Days of Listening and Relational Learning Circles. In a recent Relational Learning Circle conversation, Peter (Singapore), Karina (U.S.) and Nemat (Afghanistan) shared their wish for greater global coordination and unity during Covid-19. They spoke for every human being today. In their conversation, Nemat, who has muscular dystrophy, and whose family members all were Covid-19 infected, read a poem he wrote, entitled "Love In The Time Of Covid-19". In Nemat's reading of his poem, we can witness the human books that are being written in Nemat, urging us to read the other human books in Peter and Karina, and every other member of our planetary and human family! Peter, Karina and Nemat have since met again online to converse, their inner 'books' soaring across the world! ______________________________________________________________________________ To learn from friends across the world, join the Relational Learning Circles at https://www.relationallearningproject.com Other Relational Learning Circles, and other wonderful 'human books'!
